A Lone Survivor |

This tragic incident took place near Austin, Texas less than 25 miles from one of the highest recorded rainfall rates in the world. But neither Brushy Creek, nor the bridge was marked in any way. This woman was rescued after hanging on to a tree for more than an hour in the rushing water. The bodies of the two other motorists were found the following day.

This motorist turned a corner in a heavy rain storms and unknowingly drove into rising water that soon floated her car. She was luckily rescued from a situation that could have turned dangerous very quickly.

A Close Call for A Police Officer |

This Austin Police Officer and his partner got caught by violent floodwaters as they drove to a rescue. The two officers were seperated in the current and clung to trees for hours in the dark. A rescue boat loaded with six men later flipped and the situation began to deteriorate rapidly. Eventually, a rescue helicopter was able to pull everyone to safety in the middle of the night.

After a flood in 1998 that devasted her house, she reluctantly accepted the buyout program and moved away. Her pespective has now changed after a 2001 flood that would have ruined her home a second time.

This business owner renovated a previously flood damaged building and employed some innovative floodproofed techniques. After a flood in 2001, the building had three feet of water outside but was virtually dry inside and open for business the next day -- while neighboring businesses were ruined. The owner commented that the floodproofing more than paid for itself in just one event
